Christ Church, located in South Ossett, has been a cornerstone of the community since its establishment in 1851. The foundation of the church was largely driven by the dedication of local mill owner, Joshua Whitaker, who recognized the need for a place of worship to serve the growing population in the area. Designed by the renowned architect William Butterfield, Christ Church was built in a Gothic Revival style, a popular architectural trend of the time.

The church's construction was made possible through generous donations from the local community, including contributions from Whitaker himself. The initial building consisted of a nave, chancel, and two aisles, providing ample space for worshippers.
