Ossett United

Ossett United - A Brief History

Ossett United was formed on 1 June 2018, from the merger of two local football clubs, Ossett Town AFC (est. 1936) and Ossett Albion AFC (est. 1944). Both clubs had achieved Northern Premier League status and maintained that level of football for a considerable length of time.

The newly merged club decided to play its home games at Ingfield, the previous home of Ossett Town, and used Dimple Wells, Ossett Albion’s former ground, for its Ladies and Academy Team.

The first season was a triumph on the pitch; attendances were significantly increased from what either club had experienced previously, the team reached the play-off semi-final, and under the management of Andy Welsh, they won the County Cup. Off the pitch however, the club faced a number of challenges with board resignations and financial issues following the merger. During the 2019/20 season, Phil Smith became club chairman and the board was bolstered by new members. Unfortunately, Ossett United also faced legal and damages costs amounting to £135,000 from a court case which dated back to 2015 when Ossett Town were playing Radcliffe Borough. Fortunately, a loan from two supporters helped the club to avoid liquidation or the sale of the Ingfield ground.

In 2020, James Rogers took over as Chairman from Phil Smith and Dimple Wells was surrendered, making Ingfield the sole home of Ossett United. With off-field issues beginning to settle, the board made a number of ground improvements at Ingfield with further improvements planned in 2024.

The club has seen many managerial changes since 2019. At the time of writing, Ossett United are looking for stability in the 2023/24 season with interim manager David Brown at the helm.

Ossett United - The Stadium

Ingfield, located on Prospect Road in Ossett (WF5 9HL), is the home ground of Ossett United FC. The stadium, with a capacity of 1,950, was formerly the home of Ossett Town and was chosen by Ossett United over the now-unused Dimple Wells ground. Since becoming home to Ossett United, Ingfield has undergone significant renovations.

These upgrades include brand new seating in the Prospect Road end stand, a new Club Shop, and a new Snack Bar. The club has also been continually updating its on-site facilities, including recent makeovers of Kelly’s Sports Bar, the Supporters Club Bar, and the Hospitality Suite.

Ingfield is more than just the home of Ossett United FC, it is also home to the Ossett United’s Women’s Football Programme, which includes a first and development team.

Ossett United’s Youth Programme, consisting of two Under 18s teams and a BTEC Academy football team, also operates from Ingfield, providing 16–18-year-olds the opportunity to study for a BTEC in sport while training and competing against other teams across the Northern Premier League divisions.

The future looks bright for Ingfield, with major developments planned for the forthcoming season.
